I was in a town called Digby Nova Scotia

I was in a town called Digby Nova Scotia in my Sea Cadet uniform on a day pass from a near by naval base. It was a sunny day and boats were coming and going in the harbor. I wandered down to the boats and out on the jetty watching fishermen with their nets. One of them said hello and I took the opportunity to ask him if there was someplace where I could go for a boat ride. He paused and said how much do you think a boat ride would be worth. I’ve ventured with two dollars (1954) so he said come on aboard. They were going out to check their lobster traps and I was welcome to come along. So I went aboard and found a sheltered spot out of the way. I was totally enjoying myself the ride was everything I had wanted. After a while I got a little bored and started wandering around chatting with the two fishermen. I asked what they were doing and if I could help. They said sure when we pull up the traps you look inside and see if there’s any lobster in the trap. If you see any lobsters we will pull it up and into the boat but if there are no lobsters we won’t have to take it all the way up. After we pulled up five or six traps with no lobsters, the guys were a little puzzled and said to me are you sure there were no lobsters in the traps. I said no I didn’t see any red lobsters just some green things. Without a word they silently turned the boat around and went back and collected all the green things from the traps. They never spoke another word to me. Didn’t even say goodbye when I got off the boat. A prairie boy I always thought lobsters were red but I only ever saw a cooked lobster. Apparently live lobsters are green.
