The inspiration behind my poem, "The Gift That is Our Love" is the union of Maritza Cano and Henry Buitrago.

The gift that is love, A flash of flame that flickers, This wealth of enormous emotion, A deafening crash that renders the air weightless.

The gift that is love, With these rings of unity, forged - A quivering mass of promise and hope, Two human lives reach towards the unknown.

The gift that is love, In turbulent times, with unforeseen challenges, Though the flame stays strong - and maintains the course, The blood of two, hand in hand.

The gift that is love, Two brought together by one, Fastened by association; by His love, Two human lives reach towards the unknown.

The gift that is love, Each is the others' strength, The strength of enduring love, united and unbroken, A family, our family, is a circle, forged and joined - With a wealth of life's memories.

The gift that is love, The love that lives inside our hearts, That traveled a great distance, through the stretches of time, Full of an earned integrity and stature that soothes, The blood of two - of two that love.

Two human lives reach into the heavens.

This is the gift that is our love.

Henry Buitrago designed this 2'x 3' "The Gift That Is Our Love" and presented it to his wife, Maritza Cano on their 25th anniversary. I am deeply honoured that my poem for them was presented in this fashion and hangs up in their family home. Working at a clothing factory for 12 hours a day, six days a week, at the docile age of twelve is a sad reality.

While Ali's job may have started as a difficult chore to support his family, it's interesting how sometimes being forced into challenging situations can lead to something beautiful. For instance, the article mentioned that Ali enjoyed sewing a wedding dress for his wife and how all that practice as a young boy in a sweatshop paid off. I think of Joni Mitchell’s struggle with polio, which weakened her left hand. However, from that experience emerged countless beautiful alternative guitar tunings, allowing her to play the guitar comfortably.

Thank you for your writing, Miles.

Hello Everyone,

"Daring to live means daring to die at any moment but also means daring to be born, crossing great stages of life in which the person we have been dies, and is replaced by another with a reviewed vision of this world, and at the same time realizing that there will be many obstacles to overcome before we reach the final stage of enlightenment."

- Arnaud Desjardins

Watching and learning of Ali Alahj Obid's life I couldn't help thinking of the extraordinary Henry Buitrago, the man behind https://yohnke.com…
