AMPLIFICATION

Writer's picture: MIKE MURPHYMIKE MURPHY
Of all the amps I have ever used, I have finally found an amp that has all of the tonal qualities I think a great amp should have. This amp has many signature tonal points of many of my favourite amps all rolled into one.

It’s called a Rokdog Memphis Pro (Mike Murphy). It features 12ax7 preamp tubes and KT-66 power tubes. It has a single twelve-inch Jensen Neo speaker that I find very responsive and punchy. It has a vibrato and reverb in it also that are fantastically warm and lush. It handles the lows really well and keeps my chords and notes tight and focused. Every note of a chord is very distinctive with this amp. What is so amazing is that this amp sounds fat and full at lower volumes also. It sounds great with any type of guitar and pickup combination or effects I use. I’m a fan of hand-wired amps and this is the best example of any one I have ever played. My good friend Doug Cole hand built this amp and put a lot of time, care and effort into it. He used all top quality parts making it. Doug really takes his trade seriously and there is a lot of pride involved in the design of it (from years of tube amp knowledge). Whether it’s an outdoor show, an arena or in the studio, it always sounds incredible. With tone, versatility and reliability this amp has it all and speaks for itself. It is a tone monster. The touch sensitivity of this amp reflects what I say with my guitar with honest replication and complete accuracy. Thanks brother Doug!

1969 Deluxe Reverb Drip Edge This amp was in extremely great shape when I got it and it looks about 2 years old. Doug Cole worked his magic and it only needed a few things replaced due to age and a new Jensen Neo speaker put in it and wow! It’s got all the tone and vibe one would expect from this most famously well-known design!

1969 Deluxe Reverb I was gifted this lovely amp along with a 1970 Gibson ES-175 by Mr. Orville Olm. Please see the quick story behind that in the Electric Guitar section and the 1970 ES-175 guitar. Thanks again Orv! This amp roars like it should!

1968 Fender Twin Reverb Early Drip Edge I bought this amp from a guy without even plugging it in to try (which I never do lol). My bad. It didn’t work so great. But to be fair the price was right and I knew that going into it. It had been converted to a 1x15” and had an EV SRO 15 speaker in it. I pulled that out of there and had a new 2 x 12” baffle made from Ken Kirkwood of Kirkwood Amplification in Edmonton. Great job Ken! He makes some killer amps too! After the baffle was done I brought it for some TLC from my amp guru Doug Cole and it was brought back to life and had 2 x 12” Weber Chicago speakers put in it. All I can say is “Whoa”. If you want sparkle, spank, and clean headroom this thing holds the ace of hearts! Bakersfield Honky Tonkin’ ala Don Rich and Buck Owens! Thanks Doug for always fixing what needs fixing and keeping another time-honoured classic amp running!

2007 (Jason) Byers Amplification Model 10 I bought this after seeing an online ad. I had been looking for a small portable amp. I didn't know a thing about it but when I saw it with it's bakelight sparkle finish I had a feeling it was going to be something. I bought it sight unseen (again, something I don't usually do) but having googled it I discovered what a true and rare amp it is. Never have I heard a better low wattage amp for sparkle and grit if you want it all in one little package. With a 1 x 10" Weber in it you would not believe how big it sounds! Jeff Beck would love this amp! There isn't much info available on the amp but the guy that built it (Jason Byers) is well known for his knowledge of Leo's amps. It's a sleeper that slays!
